    100 days of plunder

    ree

The first 100 days of Donald J Trump's second term have been an orgy of pettiness, racism, and revenge.

As House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark has said, "Donald Trump is stealing from taxpayers to fund tax cuts for billionaires, and House Republicans are celebrating. Trump is illegally taking money from child care, veterans, community health centers, police, firefighters, and schools — all bipartisan funding for the American people."

Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut agrees: "This is not normal. None of this is normal. This is outlandish, this is illegal, this is unconstitutional, brazen corruption, and this is only the first 100 days."

Trump has issued 145 executive orders in his first year—more than any president since Harry Truman, who signed 139 in all of 1945. Despite mounting legal challenges, many of Trump's orders, if implemented, would personally benefit him or his associates at the expense of We The People.

Trump has repeatedly used impoundment—a tactic to withhold funds promised to the American people—both in his first term and through executive orders in his second. This practice has always been unlawful. Nevertheless, Trump, along with figures like Elon Musk and OMB Director Russ Vought, has falsely claimed that the president has an inherent power to impound funds—a notion rejected by the Government Accountability Office, the Department of Justice Office of Legal Counsel, and the Supreme Court.

Trump, Musk, and Vought have deployed unelected, unaccountable political appointees to obstruct investments meant for the American people. The Trump administration has repeatedly violated the law, diverting taxpayer funds and depriving communities of promised resources. Every instance of Republicans unilaterally stripping investments from families and businesses has direct consequences for individuals nationwide.

Says Clark, "This is all part of Donald Trump’s plot to enrich himself and his billionaire cronies while leaving everyday Americans to foot the bill. First, he fired the inspectors general charged with fighting corruption. Now, he’s tossing aside the Constitution to seize money that belongs to taxpayers."

At a pre-election rally in Pennsylvania, Donald Trump called for “one real rough, nasty” and “violent day” of police retaliation to eliminate crime “immediately.” If such a crackdown were to occur, I’d hope Trump himself would not be exempt from its reach.
